The Brandenburg State Bird Conservation Centre
On differences between Brandenburg State Bird Conservation Centre and Ornithological stations
Hiddensee, Helgoland and Radolfzell, the three German ornithological stations, primarily carry out ornithological research. To do so, they have specialised on different knowledge areas. Bird protection stations, however, are organised at federal-state level. Their duties are to co-ordinate field-level ornithological species protection or to provide knowledge and groundwork required.
Most important information in brief
- preparing foundations for bird protection in the state of Brandenburg;
- co-ordination of research and science-based bird ringing;
- long-term monitoring of bird numbers and reproduction;
- working out species protection programmes and red lists;
- implementing species-related bird-protection strategies;
- species related (e. g. for the Great Bustard and meadow breeders);
- subject-related (such as bird protection near transmission lines);
- area-related (such as in the 27 Special Protection Areas (SPAs) in the state of Brandenburg);
- how to deal with bird species in areas of conflict.
- Implementing the protection of species
- compilation and evaluation of data in keeping with international conventions, such as the (Bonn) convention on the conservation of migratory species, the EU Birds Directive, and the Agreement on the conservation of African-Eurasian migratory water birds (AEWA).
Co-operation with the authorities responsible for nature conservation,
farming and hunting enjoys maximum priority in all the activities of the state
bird protection station at all times. It goes without saying that it also works
closely together with many ornithologists volunteering their services.
Comprehensive co-operation has also been established with universities and
scientific institutions at home and abroad.
